A warrior guardian keeps a close eye on the Evil - a stone with incredible power from the abyss. Once every centennial, the Evil is awaken and that time is now. Emperor Gruumm wants the Evil for himself. At headquarters, Commander Cruger, Bridge, Sky, Jack, Sydney, and Z prepare for training. Commander Cruger and the cadets suit up and the simulation goes to a rooftop setting. Shadow Ranger is prepared to battle all five Rangers. The Rangers soon find out it's not so easy to defeat the Shadow Ranger as he counters their every move with a more powerful one. Later in the rec room, Jack and his friends decide with Shadow Ranger on their side, they don't have to work so hard. That night, Syd, Z, Bridge, Sky, and Jack are awaken by Kat who informs them of a monster in the city. The Rangers suit up and soon encountered the monster in the city. The Rangers have a difficult time defeating the monster and call Commander Cruger for backup. Much to Kat's surprise, Commander Cruger shuts off the communication between him and the Rangers and refuses to help them.
The Rangers can not believe Commander Cruger will not help them and they continue to battle with the monster. The Rangers are not doing well. The sun rises and the monster retreats, leaving behind a container. The Rangers return to headquarters with the container. They entered the control room and they are furious with Commander Cruger, asking him why he didn't help them. Commander Cruger tells them that they did fine without him before. Kat walks in - the Rangers had contacted her - and Sky asks her if she knows what the container is. Kat is concerned when she sees what the object is and more so when Commander Cruger tells the cadets they cannot use Kat's help. Angry, Jack, Sky, Syd, Z, and Bridge leave the control room. Kat asks Commander Cruger if he recognizes the object and he does, but still will not help the cadets. Kat leaves the control room - confused over Commander Cruger's attitude. Sky, Syd, Z, Bridge, and Jack head to the one place they know to get information - Piggy's. Bridge shows Piggy the object and Piggy becomes scared. Piggy tells them that the object is a class 5 containment field. Piggy also tells them of the stone from the abyss and the immense power it has. Piggy tells them that the stone is being guarded by Baskin in Ye Old Bookstore. Syd, Z, Bridge, Jack, and Sky enter the bookstore, but they don't find anything. Baskin appears and asks them what they want and pretends he doesn't know about any stone. Kat contacts the cadets and tells them that a giant robot is attacking the city. Z, Bridge, Jack, Sky, and Syd leave and Baskin opens a book that contains the stone. Bridge, Jack, Sky, Syd, and Z suit up, entered their delta runners, form the megazord and begin battling the robot. At the library the monster appears and Baskin and the monster battle. Despite his efforts, Baskin is defeated and the monster uses the stone to become more powerful. Meanwhile at the control Commander Cruger and Kat watch the two scenes and despite Kat's protests, Commander Cruger still refuses to help the Rangers. The Rangers defeat the giant robot, but the more powerful monster has appeared. The Rangers battle the monster and have a difficult time. Commander Cruger appears on a roof top and watches the battle. The Red Ranger notices Commander Cruger and asks him why he won't help them. Commander Cruger tells the Red Ranger he can do this. Red Ranger joins the rest of the Rangers and they arrest and contain the monster. With the monster contained, the stone is freed. The Green Ranger places the stone in a small, metal case. Bridge, Sky, Jack, Syd, and Z return to the bookstore and return the stone to Baskin. Baskin tells them that it's the first time in 2,000 years that the stone had been taken from him. Baskin considers moving to New Zealand before wishing the cadets well before vanishing. Sky, Jack, Syd, Z, and Bridge return to headquarters and the control room. Commander Cruger's back is towards them as the cadets, still angry, want to know where the Shadow Ranger was during their battles. Commander Cruger turns towards them and tells the cadets that he had overheard their conversation about taking it easy now that Shadow Ranger was on their side. Commander Cruger told them that not one Ranger is more important than another and that they had to stay in top form to defeat Emperor Gruumm. Jack, Syd, Z, Bridge, and Sky acknowledge that Commander Cruger is right and they will work better as a team.
